Becoming an independent game tester can be a great way to break into the video game industry. Finding bugs and glitches in games will earn you money from companies to go to college or even make a living. This work can be done at home and somewhat at your own pace. To independently make a living in game testing, you first need to start looking for companies that send you beta tests and independently tested games. There’s a link at the bottom of the page that shows you how to sign up with these companies, but I’ll provide a few ways to help you market yourself as a tester.

gaming community

Although the gaming community is known for sarcasm and ruthless scrutiny, it can still help to be known among gaming fans. Start making your job title known and without leaking information, try to convey that you have worked in previous games. Write posts and forum threads, providing in-depth information (you’ll learn after signing up) about the gaming industry and video game testing. Although most gamers can be off-putting, don’t subject yourself to this kind of video game treatment. Do not respond to any comments that are in poor taste and always be professional.

blog

Start a couple of blogs or a website that talks about past projects you’ve worked on (unless information provided to you by a game company says otherwise). Tell us about your experience and if you have any education that supports your skills. Please also provide any specific hardware platforms you have tested on. Of course, mention that you have independent status and are willing to accept work from a suitable company. To drive traffic to your new site or blog, include a link to your address in the signature of your forum posts and on your other blogs. Publishers and developers can be impressed with your online resume and keep in touch with you.

Agreements

Lastly, if you are truly committed to this line of business in the video game industry, you should start attending conventions. Video game conventions will have tons of companies, game developers, and other testers. You need to network with these important people because they may consider you a future client. Talking to developers isn’t like talking to movie stars or pop artists, it’s gamers like you and me. Don’t be intimidated by their stature in the gaming community, just try to keep them interested and get their email.
