#1. Choose open cabinets

One of the biggest problems with small kitchens is that they can feel quite claustrophobic because there are too many cabinets crammed into this limited space. Removing them is usually not an option, because there are so many items that need to be stored in the room. Open cabinets offer an efficient solution to this problem because they don’t create a “boxed-in” feel. These storage areas also give you the opportunity to use fancy jars, glasses and tableware as decoration.

#two. Add a kitchen island

Small kitchens don’t offer enough counter space to work comfortably. A kitchen island can solve the problem of having a work surface, but such an important construction job will only work if the design of the room is minimalist.

The counter of the room must be white (preferably marble) and its background must be open. This way the island will not look ‘awkward’.

#3. Mix materials to create interesting designs.

Limited space does not allow you much room to create a beautiful interior. You can compensate for this by mixing a variety of materials and playing with differences in textures and colors. Every functional part of the room – cabinet doors, countertops, lighting, ceiling, windows, flooring, and fixtures – should be treated as an important design element. Keep this in mind as you study your kitchen remodeling contractor’s materials and look for interesting combinations. Remember that to be attractive, the final look must be ‘unified’ in color or style.

#4. Opt for original and mobile seats

Even if you live alone in the apartment, you may want to entertain guests in the kitchen at some point. Seating is therefore essential, but benches and chairs take up too much space. There are some solutions to this problem. You can choose mobile benches and chairs that can stay in the living room or some other part of your home until you need them. In this case, you will need to carry them around the house when you prepare to receive your guests.

If you prefer to have fixed bar stools at your kitchen island, you will need to choose ones that are small, but still large enough to accommodate an adult. Choose options made of transparent materials so that they give the illusion of a spacious room.

#5. Includes crystal details

Glass is the best material for small kitchens as it allows you to create an illusion of space. You can install glass countertops, cabinet doors, or a kitchen door. Depending on your floor plan, you may be able to install a window in the next room as part of your kitchen remodeling project. This will give the space a ‘lighter’ look, especially with strategically installed lighting.

#6. Add a splash of color

If the kitchen is small, a single brightly colored detail can help expand it visually. It will constantly draw the eyes, tricking the mind into thinking that the space surrounding this ‘centre piece’ is larger than it really is.

Note that this piece does not have to be located in the center of the room. For example, you might install a bright orange cabinet in a muted gray and white kitchen. A few smaller accents in the matching hue will complete the look.

#7. Expand the space with lighting.

There are hundreds of funky lighting fixtures that can help completely transform a space. Your kitchen remodeling contractors should give you some ideas on how to use them more efficiently in your particular case. For example, installing incandescent lights under hanging cabinets will ‘counteract’ the cool, bluish fluorescent or LED main lights, making the space feel more inviting. Hanging lights over the eating area will visually ‘lift’ the ceiling.

#8. Install top quality flooring.

Efficient and beautiful floors are vital for a small kitchen. Opt for a checkered pattern as it is eye-catching and can expand the space visually. Since the room is small, you should be able to afford premium materials.
