Annamalai University is the largest university in Asia offering distance learning courses. There are more than 400 study courses, which can be chosen by the students. The University boasts of a scholarly faculty numbering nearly 2,500 in strength.

In 1979, the Distance Education Directorate was established. The National Council for Assessment and Accreditation has accredited Annamalai University. Students are enrolled in the various programs not only in India but also in other countries that make the university distinguished. The university has established study centers throughout the state of Tamil Nadu as well as throughout the country. Students who take correspondence courses with the University can select the center that best suits them. They can pick up the study material at the centers or directly at the university. Students can also receive course material through postal services.

The course content is comprehensive and well designed. It consists of interactive aids such as VCDs, audiovisual presentations, tasks, etc.
