Crate Lake Camp in Naivasha Kenya offers luxurious tented accommodation on the tree-lined shores of this unusual jade green volcanic lake. The crater walls surround the campground and the lake, giving a closed feeling of privacy and seclusion. To get to the campground, go down the attractive built rustic steps, and say hello to many of them.

Built under a giant fever tree and facing the lake, there are eight attractively decorated tents and two log cabins. Accommodations are romantic and private. You climb the stairs to your spacious tent, which is on a raised wooden platform, has a thatched roof and a beautiful stone bathroom. From the rocking chairs on your deck and from your bed, look out over the tranquil lake and the rugged crater walls beyond. There are some particularly nice touches like the use of carved acacia and obsidian chunks in the constructions. Colorful bedspreads, decoratively painted clay pots, and unusual roofs (straw lined with burlap) add to the charm of the place. There are dressing rooms in the bathroom and mineral water by the bed.

The pleasant bar and dining room are facing a large open terrace overlooking the lake. There are solid wood chairs with large cushions and daybeds for lounging on the lawn. Guests can take a stroll along the lake shore and there is a wooden jetty with steps down to the lake for those who want to swim. The life of the birds is incredible: there are an abundance of waders in the shallow waters and the swifts skim the water. At a certain time of year, pink flamingos add a surreal touch to the vivid green of the lake. Black and white colobus monkeys frolic in the trees and wake you up in the morning with their strange calls echoing over the water.

Accompanied walks are possible across the plains of the historic Ndabibi Estate, home to a variety of game animals such as giraffes, eland, and cheetahs. Lady Dalamere and her two husbands are buried in a scenic outcrop on the estate. An early morning hike (for the safer) around the crater rim offers beautiful views of the plains and escarpments beyond and into the peaceful crater below. Night safaris are also offered, Crater Lake Campground is a wonderfully peaceful and romantic place, a perfect place to relax and recharge. Crater Lake offers classic getaways for special interest groups, including painting and astrology weekends, as well as expert bird watching.

The camp will prepare special romantic excursions: sunsets on the panoramic outcrop of Leopard Rock or a candlelight dinner on the jetty by the lake, while our safari vehicles can take you to the spectacular gorge of Hell’s Gate or the sparkling expanse of the Lake Nakuru, home to more than half of the world’s lesser flamingos. But for all its spectacular surroundings, visitors to Crater Lake often prefer to sit on its decks overlooking what must be one of the most beautiful small lakes in creation. Our camp has been described as “the most romantic tent camp in Kenya”, and we challenge any couple not to fall in love again!
