As summer approaches, many homeowners are no doubt thinking about remodeling their home. The warm weather provides the perfect atmosphere to get into the spirit of renewal, and since many of us take vacations during this period, we obviously have time to go in and remodel those parts of our residence that we don’t care for, or add in extra space to accommodate to those who now live with us.

Having trouble getting into the remodeling mood or trouble figuring out which project to tackle first? Summer goes by as fast as it comes, so now is the time to start thinking about that home remodeling project you want to complete. Here are some projects to consider working on, depending on having the need and budget for them:

room additions

Room additions are especially popular with growing families. Are your children too old to share a room, or have you recently added another family member? Adding another bedroom can alleviate the problems. If a parent or in-law will be staying with you permanently, adding them will give them the privacy they want while being close by.

Another option, although more complicated, is to put another story in your house. Second-story additions add more than just the space needed—they greatly increase the resale value of your home.

base finish

It is more common these days to have a base that is more of an entertainment or living space rather than a storage area. Finishing your basement does exactly that (while also increasing the value of your home). Many choose to convert their base into an additional space for work or play, and others transform theirs into an additional bedroom. The options are virtually limitless when you’re trying to make a decision about what to do with your basement.

Terrace or Patio

Maybe you don’t want to remodel the interior space, but add something else outside so you can enjoy the weather. Decks and patios do just that. Adding a terrace or patio is like adding another room, but outside. Plus, they’re great for hosting parties, barbecues, and other events.

kitchens and bathrooms

Remodeling the kitchen and/or bathroom is the age old home remodeling project, but they are the ones that can greatly benefit your home, aesthetically and financially. Experts point out that of all the renovations a homeowner can do, renovating the kitchen has the highest return on investment, while renovating the bathroom will increase the value of your property by 102-103%.

Don’t let the summer of 2012 go by without work. Remodeling your home can be expensive at first, but these are projects that pay you back, with interest, in the long run.
