Reading comprehension worksheets should have moderate patterns. That is, it should not be so difficult to understand or so easy to solve. Some publishers make their worksheets easy to approve so the school administrator can continue to order their products. That is not good educational practice.

From research, it has been observed that very easy worksheets encourage students to be less serious in their studies and also cause students to start losing focus.

Reading comprehension worksheets should be designed in a way that makes students do the following after reading the test.

  • Students should be able to obtain references from the passage.
  • They should be tested in the scope assimilation worksheet.
  • The worksheet should test the students’ ability to recall details.
  • The vocabulary meaning of the words should also be assessed using the comprehension worksheet.

READING WORKSHEET CONTENT

The worksheet should contain different stories, poems, articles, and essays. The complexity of the stories should depend on the grade level of the students. Students in grades 1-5 should be given folklores that represent some of America’s history as well as some religious myths minted into interesting stories. Such worksheets should test simple understanding of tense and meaning of words in context. The story structure quiz should also be included in story comprehension.

In addition, you should also have practice questions on the following:

  • fact and opinion
  • Main idea
  • Context clues

It is highly recommended to integrate as many aspects of the questions in one worksheet as it is to divide it into many worksheets. Therefore, for students in grades 4-6, the following quizzes should be added.

  • Punctuation
  • Grammar
  • Prize Structure
  • Parts of the sentence
  • Verbal tense

Integrating the above can help them really understand it when they come up in their educational endeavors.

For the advanced level worksheet, some of the higher questions that test your level of understanding should be included for practice. Students should be able to derive author’s intent, paragraph structure, passage meaning, and important word meanings from the worksheet. Also for the poems we should be able to know if the students have really understood

  • making references
  • figurative language
  • Point of view
  • Text structure and interactive genre.
