Road safety is not an impossible achievement, but a very easy goal that requires surprisingly little work on the part of the driver. It all comes down to common sense and following the rules of the road. However, the basic guidelines for achieving road safety may have been forgotten or overlooked over the years of driving.

Road safety starts before the car pulls out of the driveway. Make sure the car is in working order; check the tires, lights and oil to start. Once in the car, make sure the mirrors are properly adjusted. And of course, fasten your seat belt.

While you’re on the road, staying safe can be tricky, but if you can be mindful and aware, this task should be easier. Learn about the car’s capabilities, such as braking and turning ability. Drive defensively and be careful at all intersections where most accidents occur. Parked cars can be especially dangerous as at any moment a door could open or a car could get out. Of course, the simple reminders to ‘Don’t drink and drive’ and never drive while drowsy will always apply.

If the worst happens and you discover that your car has broken down, road safety can become an extremely important issue. Make sure you have a tool kit and safety triangles in your car. Pull the vehicle off the road and keep a good distance away while you wait for help.

Road safety is just a matter of common sense and following the established rules and laws that every driver must abide by. Keeping the car in good working order, being careful and being prepared will help to drive safely. Other tips may include reviewing the rules of the road and keeping car maintenance up to date.
