When traveling with your pet… carry a health certificate, valid identification and medical record. Traveling with dogs requires good planning and preparation in advance.

car trips…not all dogs like to travel and if your pet is not used to traveling in your vehicle, take a few short trips and slowly work your way up to longer trips.

Be sure to use proper restraints when your dog is traveling in a vehicle. Many companies now make seat belt systems and travel boxes. A dog crate is considered the most popular investment to keep your pet safe. A car traveling 35 miles per hour can add 30 pounds to your dog in an accident. Keep your pet safe while traveling on the road.

Don’t leave your dog locked in a car. In 70-degree weather, it takes a very short time for the temperature to climb into the triple digits. Leaving the window down several inches does not provide enough ventilation. Many states are now passing laws that prohibit leaving your dog alone in a vehicle. In extreme temperatures it is best to leave your dog at home.

Many hotels are pet friendly…so do your research and make sure your “loved one” has a place to stay for the night. Use proper dog etiquette when visiting a “dog-friendly” hotel. Many former “dog friendly” hotels no longer accept pets due to past bad behavior by others. Clean up after dog walks and keep your dog on a leash at all times. Don’t leave your dog unattended in the hotel room, as dog barking is always a big complaint from other guests…

air travel…airlines have different procedures for transporting pets. Travel costs will also vary between airlines.

If there is a risk of airline delays…this should be a consideration as your dog can be caged in cargo holds in extreme weather conditions for long hours. In these cases, you should consider leaving your pet at home.

Travel abroad…the requirements of the country you want to travel to can make the decision for you. Some countries like Great Britain require quarantines that can last 6 months or more.

Canada and Mexico require you to show proof of vaccination. Canada requires proof of rabies vaccination within the last 3 years. Mexico requires proof of vaccination in the last year. Hawaii law requires you to quarantine your pet for 6 months.

Many airlines allow small dogs in approved carriers to travel with the passenger in the aircraft cabin.

The safety of your pet should always be the main consideration when you decide to travel with your dog.
