Countless parents are concerned about the potential side effects of ADHD medication, but is it really necessary? After all, stimulant drugs that are used efficiently to treat ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) have already been used for decades.

Not only have these drugs been around for a long time, but as we all know, any new drug must undergo extensive testing before it is approved for human use by the FDA. Now while I would never dream of discussing this, at the same time I have my doubts when it comes to these drugs.

For example, many of the studies that were done were funded by the pharmaceutical companies that make these drugs. The results of the studies are then delivered to the relevant health authorities in various countries. These governing bodies then decide whether or not the drugs can be prescribed and used in their respective countries.

If these drugs are as safe as the manufacturers say, why are certain truths withheld from the public? This may not be the case in all countries where the drugs are available, but it has certainly happened in some countries. If my memory serves me correctly, Sweden is one of those countries. Documents printed and issued by the manufacturer contained a warning that was kept hidden from the public for several years.

The document in question warned that the drugs may increase the risk of suicide, especially if administered to people with a history of depression. The documents also list and discuss various other potential side effects, ranging from very mild to extremely serious effects.

Mild side effects, such as weight loss; dizziness; upset stomach and nausea aren’t really a serious concern. On the other hand, things like irreversible heart damage and/or suicidal thoughts are no laughing matter.

Before dismissing such warnings, it’s worth keeping in mind that there have been a disturbing number of suicides linked to these drugs. Even more alarming is the fact that many of these have involved children and adolescents.

The only real way to avoid the potential side effects of ADHD medications would be to refrain from taking them. This of course means that you simply have to learn to live with the disorder, or else seek an alternative form of treatment. The good news is that many parents have realized the risks associated with ADHD medications, and many have found safer alternatives.
