Symi is a beautiful mountainous island covered in lush forests. The most famous monastery on the island here is in Panormitis. It dates from the year 450 AD. C. and it really is a must see. Remember to wear modest clothing when you go on this excursion. You will also see some beautiful silver icons of the archangel. In Yailos you will find a very good nautical museum. The promenade of the port is very picturesque and ideal to sit and have a drink, while watching the boats come in. There is also a castle in Yailos to visit. The monastery is charming in Panormitis and has a very decorative arch leading to the courtyard. The whole island has beautiful views and lovely places to visit.

There is lush greenery and pastel colored houses scattered everywhere. It is the ideal place for a quiet vacation. If you are using Symi as a base to visit the other islands then it is ideal and quite peaceful. From here you can organize different tours that can be one day or several days at a time. The one in Athens is a must if you have the budget. Or you can take the ferry to Rhodes town. If you are in Symi during the Easter celebrations, you will have a great time. The towns are lit and decorated to a high standard and the song and dance festivities and a feast of food lining the streets are a great experience and a good way to sample traditional Greek cuisine.

Beaches

There are some nice beaches around Symi and lovely coves. Not all beaches are soft sand; they appear to be mostly made of pebbles but are peaceful with only a few water sports available. They are ideal beaches for those who just want to read a novel and get a tan, or for children to play safe and bathe in the warm turquoise waters. Water taxis are available to make some of the more secluded beaches accessible. Most of the beaches have very good facilities with cafes close by for a drink and lunch.

Night life

There are no lively nightclubs in Symi that are blasting with the latest music. All you will get here are nice restaurants to eat and drink to spend your evening. There are a club or two behind the port for the younger age group but if you are looking to dance in the fantastic light then you are in the wrong place, you would be better off in Rhodes town.

Eating

Eating on this island can be quite interesting. Among the usual Greek cuisine you can eat miniature shrimp or snails that are caught in the local waters, along with other seafood snacks. If you’re not a big fan of fish, there are plenty of meat dishes to try. Chicken smyrnia, which is tender chicken cooked in white wine, is very tasty and suitable for most palates. There are no burger joints or pizzerias on the island, but some of the restaurants serve some international cuisine.
